God's Own Country (2017) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Writer-director Francis Lee creates a more credible rural milieu, anchored in the grubby details of raising livestock and the furious emotional repression of his male characters. Julian S A bitter, melancholic tale of the choices imposed on you and those you long to make. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review JD I There's no greater compliment I can give than this... I wanted it to go on and on to tell the rest of the story. It was so beautifully constructed and directed. The vulnerability and strength of each character was so clear... Gemma Jones was a stand out. Her character didn't approve or understand the coupling, but accepted that her grandson's happiness was wrapped up in being with another man. She played it brilliantly, keeping her judgement at a quiet distance and allowing love to bloom and even forwarding it along in her way. That being said, the leads were perfection, the dad Ian Hart, couldn't have been cast and played better and the cinematography stunning. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Francesca C Such a great movie. It gets deep on you and stays. Brilliant screenplay, brilliant acting and wonderful portrait of humanity, both through people and nature. Loved it. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Hargie M A poignant reminder that love knows no bounds, and that even in the most desolate of places, hope can bloom like the heather on the moors. Breathtakingly raw and emotionally charged journey that will leave you spellbound. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review James L Almost a stand-alone in queer cinema. Less sexual than sensual. Less sensual than emotional. Less emotional than psychological. But, not wanting in any of these. As much a meditation on love as it is in growth, maturity, and becoming. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Alec B At first, it seems to be nothing more than a reworking of "Brokeback Mountain" in Yorkshire but then it gradually morphs into something a bit more hopeful and ultimately quite different. Both O'Connor and Secareanu give terrific performances. Nuanced but also filled with emotion. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
